James River State Park offers a variety of habitats, including large fields, a wetland, and trails paralleling the James River. A trip here at this time of year offers the possibility for a variety of sparrows, several species of raptors, lingering migrants, and newly arrived winter residents. Meet Ashley Lohr at 7:30 AM at the Amherst County Visitor Center located at the Rt 29 exit at Rt 60. Make a right at the top of the ramp at the Rt 60 exit, then an immediate right into the Visitor Center parking lot. We will take Rt 60 east and make a stop at the Bent Creek boat ramp before going to the park where we will stop at several locations and do some exploring by foot. Bring drinks and snacks; we will plan to conclude our trip by lunchtime. Note that the James River State Park entrance fee is $5 cash per vehicle. If the weather looks questionable, contact Ashley Lohr the night before the trip to confirm if the outing is still planned.

On Saturday, December 20, the Lynchburg Bird Club will participate in the 85th (and 67th consecutive) annual Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the National Audubon Society. This count has been tracking the distribution and abundance of U.S. birds since 1900 and is an invaluable tool for conservation and research efforts. It is also an opportunity for birders in our club to survey winter bird life in our local area and add to our knowledge while enjoying the activity. If you participated last year, your party leader will contact you in early December to coordinate coverage of your territory. If you would like to join us on your first Lynchburg Christmas Bird Count, contact Gene Sattler to be connected with a group.
