Culinary Basics (1/2 Credit)
Open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
The purpose of this course is to give students basic knowledge associated with food and to introduce lab procedures and techniques used food preparation. Students will learn food safety and sanitation techniques, kitchen equipment and lab procedures, menu planning, food preparation in a home setting as well as in a culinary kitchen, careers in hospitality, and baking techniques. Students will also work in the school restaurant. Syllabus
Advanced Culinary Arts (1/2 Credit)
Open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with advanced nutrition, food buying and food preparation skills. Advanced nutrition, table etiquette, consumerism and food advertising, food storage, meat cookery, yeast breads and simple garnishing techniques will be studied.
Child Development I (1/2 Credit)
Open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
This course emphasizes the responsibilities of the family to provide individual development and socialization of children. Students will learn about the stages of pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as proper care of the newborn. Students will also learn growth and development patterns of the child age 0-10 and the responsibilities of raising a child. A baby simulator will also be used. Syllabus
Family Relationships (1/2 Credit)
Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
This course helps students understand the importance of healthy relationships and a healthy lifestyle within the family. Students will explore the relationship of personality, environment, and heredity and will examine families of the past, present and future. They will explore adult life from their current situation (dating) and continue through major life events including marriage, parenting, balancing work and family, divorce and aging. Students will study crisis areas of life; abuse addiction, suicide, death and acquire an understanding of how society deals with these difficulties, as well as how to gain strength through the experiences. Health Occupations (1/2 Credit)
Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
This course will allow students the opportunity to explore the many employment possibilities in the health occupations field, while also preparing for future courses in the medical area. Students attain knowledge and skills that will prepare them for entry level jobs in the health occupation areas, covering information such as history and trends in Health Care, legal responsibilities and ethics, communication and cultural diversity, infection control, medical terminology, health care systems, and safety. Current events in the health field will also be an integral part of this course.
