6th Grade

The primary objective of the DARE Elementary curriculum is to develop the capacities students need to take charge of their lives. Particular emphasis is placed on student health, social decision making skills regarding healthy friendships, handling peer pressure and avoiding drug abuse. During this program the students are introduced to the DARE Decision-Making model: Define (the problem), Assess (what are your choices), Respond (make a choice), and Evaluate (review your decision).

Lesson 1: Introduction to D.A.R.E.’s Keepin’ it Real

Students are introduced to the D.A.R.E. program and the D.A.R.E. Decision-Making Model. Students practice skills used in decision-making. The students will define what it means to be responsible and identify the responsibilities in their daily life.

Lesson 2: Drug information for Responsible Decision Making

The students will identify how tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana impacts the body and students responsibilities.

Lesson 3: Risk and Consequences

The students will define risk and consequences and apply it to real life situations. They will also identify positive and negative consequences about risky situations.

Lesson 4: Peer Pressure

Students will define pressure and peer pressure. Students will identify sources of peer pressure and learn strategies for responding to peer pressure.

Lesson 5: Dealing with Stressful Situations

Students will identify possible signs of stress, including physical and behavioral signs of stress.

Lesson 6: Basics of Communication

Students will explain the importance of communication in daily living and demonstrate confident communication styles.

Lesson 7: Nonverbal Communication and Listening

Students will define effective listening behaviors. They will demonstrate effective listening using verbal and nonverbal behaviors.

Lesson 8: Bullying

Students will define and recognize characteristics of bullying and identify bullying behaviors. Students will identify the difference between telling and tattling and learn ways to report bullying.

Lesson 9: Helping Others

Students will identify the importance of being a good citizen. Students will recognize the importance of reporting bullying to an adult at school or home. Students will learn positive behaviors to stop bullying.

Lesson 10: Getting Help from Others and Review

Students will identify people in their lives who they can go to for help. Students will define help networks and review previously learned key terms.

Lesson 11: Role Models

Students are introduced to High School Role Models. During the class discussion students are allowed to ask questions and Role Models explain the various activities they are involved in with school that help them stay drug and violence free.

Lessons 12 and 13: Reading Essay’s and Review

Each student reads their essay in front of the class. The lesson will close with an overall review of all DARE lessons.

DARE Graduation

Parents and guests are invited to the school to recognize the students' achievements and to congratulate them on their goal to stay drug and violence free.
