Marketing

Welcome to Marketing!

Marketing is a business class designed to give you insight to the world of marketing and DECA. In class we will discuss several marketing topics including retail selling, promotion, pricing, distribution, market research, entrepreneurship and job interview. Through DECA, you will have the opportunity to participate in various competitive events, leadership, social and community service activities.

Course Description: This class will introduce the student to the role of promotion in selling and business operations. This class will demonstrate how a business communicates with its customers using the promotional elements of advertising, visual merchandising display, public relations, and publicity. The course also looks at how each element contributes to the promotional mix of a business. This course will introduce the student to the marketing function of product branding, packaging, labeling, and positioning.

Course Expectations: This class will be run in a seminar format encouraging an open exchange of ideas and learning between all class members and the teacher. Respect for self, fellow students, and the teacher is critical for an effective seminar atmosphere. Each member of the class is a valuable individual and should be treated as such. Therefore, interrupting or disrespecting fellow class members or the teacher in any form including put-downs, swearing, complaining, and/or class disruptions will NOT be tolerated. Each student will be expected to actively and productively participate in classroom discussions. The nature of your participation will be taken as a reflection of the level of your preparation. The goal is not simply to talk, but rather to contribute in such a way that you encourage and stimulate others to take part in a discussion that will benefit everyone.

Supplies Needed: A folder or notebook for class handouts, blue or black pen, a pencil, and your student calendar. All students are expected to come to class prepared with these items EVERY day.

Attendance/Behavior Policy: Attendance and behavior are accounted for in your seminar participation grade which comprises 20% of your final course grade. See handout on Seminar Participation Grading.

Late Work Policy: It is the students’ responsibility to turn in all assigned work on time in class. Only two late assignments per semester will be allowed and no late work is accepted other than that assigned in the current six week grading period. A late work “pass” must be completed and attached to any late assignment turned in or it will not be accepted. If you are absent due to an illness or other excused reason, the assigned work must be turned in within two days of the student’s absence. It is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher outside of class for missed assignments. Remember, due to the nature of some assignments, not all work can be made up (i.e. group projects completed in class, etc.).

End of Semester Grading Scale:

90 to 100% = A

80 to 89% = B

70 to 79% = C

60 to 69% = D

Fun Fact: My first experience with advertising was when I "starred" in a commercial at the age of 10.
