Math

Welcome to my Math Page

1. The entire Elementary School utilizes the instructional materials provided by New York State called "A Story of Units." The program moves students gradually through a single concept so that they will develop a deep understanding of the mathematical concept. Student materials are organized as workbooks. Each night your child will bring home the unit workbook. Included in the workbook are a double-sided "Problem Set" that we worked on together, an "Exit Ticket" that shows what your child was expected to master in the lesson, and a double-sided homework page. It is crucial that your child completes his/her nightly homework daily as each new lesson builds upon the previous day. There are support materials available at online at EngageNY, Eureka Math, and Zearn.com. There are links below to help you support your child's understanding the concepts.

2. It is imperative that you assist your child in mastering the basic facts including addition, subtraction, and multiplication. We will have daily math fact practice. Fluency in knowing basic math facts is imperative to a strong foundation in mathematical understanding. Please encourage your child to practice their math facts. If your child is struggling with these, I have several great links below that provide fun ways to practice math facts. To check out the Links, just read the description at the bottom of the page and then click to visit the site.

The 2023 New York State Mathematics Assessments

will be administered May 2- May 4

The tests will be on two of these days (not all three)

The tests will assess your child's proficiency of the Common Core Curriculum.

For more information about the NYS 3-8 tests, visit the NYS Education's website. They periodically post information regarding testing. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/ei/eigen.html

There is also information available at EngageNY (another NYS website; this one shares information about the Common Core Standards) http://engageny.org

http://thinkingblocks.com/

ThinkingBlocks.com is a fantastic website that will allow your child to practice the RDW (Read, Draw, Write) strategy for solving word problems. It utilizes the "bar model" or "tape diagram" method of drawing to solve the word problem. Tapes and Bars are an easy, visual way for kids to understand complex math problems that you and I would often use algebra to solve. We will use this website A LOT this year.

LearnZillion.com is a great resource if you're having trouble understanding how your child is being taught this year. There are short video lessons that will explain the different methods we are incorporating that will enable your child to problem solve and think more deeply about math. "It's not the old way you and I were taught."

Oakdale Joint Unified School District has great helpful links to copies of the homework in both English and Spanish as well as videos to show how to answer homework problems. They also have links to Sprints and LearnZillion videos. another link to videos
