Academic and Behavioral Expectations

Mrs. Rubenzahl’s Discipline Policy

My classroom is a place where all students should feel secure, cared about, appreciated and respected. I believe that everyone deserves respect. I do not tolerate hurtful jokes, sarcasm, or put-downs. I see our classroom as a team, and we all support each other. I believe that all students can and will behave appropriately in my classroom. Inappropriate behaviors will be shaped by acknowledgments of appropriate behaviors and by positive praise given to the whole class. If your child is having a difficult time, he/she may choose to spend a couple of minutes in our “take a break” spot to reflect on what they need to do to rejoin the class. Being aware of oneself and controlling our own behavior is extremely important in being able to learn and interact with others. I will take time to talk quietly with your child if necessary, and together we will formulate a personal plan for correcting repeated misbehavior.

Paychecks and Fines

This year your child will be earning “Class Cash” in a variety of ways. Your child will earn a “paycheck” for following procedures, getting you to sign things, and completing homework. Students will also be able to earn “Class Cash” by completing extra-credit work. (Adults are rewarded with a paycheck at the end of the week for doing their job.) The students will also have to pay fines if they lose homework papers or forget folders. (Adults choose to park in no-parking zones and are assessed a fine.) Class Cash can be used to purchase school supplies, snacks, items from the treasure box and various classroom privileges including individual lockers, use of the teacher’s chair, special lunches, book orders, and more.
