When can my child get a permit?
30 days prior to the enrollment of Driver Education at Lisle Senior High School (not a private driving school).
Does my child have to have a permit to take the Driver Safety and Education class?
No. But the two courses are strongly suggested to be taken simultaneously.
How long is a permit good for?
Every permit expires TWO years from the date it was issued.
Who can my child drive with on a permit?
An adult 21 years of age or older with a valid driver's license must be in the front seat while a student drives with a permit.
How long must my child hold a permit prior to obtaining a driver's license?
9 months and one day
Does my child need to be covered under my auto insurance when driving on a permit?
No. Not until they receive their actual driver's license do they need their own auto insurance plan.
Do the behind-the-wheel hours count towards my child's required 50 hours?
No. Each student must drive 50 hours at home with their parent or guardian and then get an ADDITIONAL 12 hours with the behind the wheel instructor.
When can my child start driving?
As soon as they pass their permit test and have their actual permit.
What if my child fails the permit test?
Your child can go home and study or they can retake the test right away with Mrs. Hamann. After the second failed attempt they must go to the Driving Facility and repay to retake the test. Each test attempt is a $20 fee.
Where should I take my child to practice driving?
A parking lot is a great place to start so the student can get use to pedals and sitting in the driver's seat. However, the parking lot is only beneficial for so long and the student does not gain any realistic experience such as; turning corners, using turn signals, stopping at stop signs, etc. The meadows or any other minimally congested subdivision is a great place to practice on real roads where there is little traffic and wide driving lanes.

Yes. $250.00
Does my child need to have the permit with them when they drive?
Yes. It is illegal otherwise.
What if my child loses their permit?
A new permit can be issued at the DMV with a fee of $5 along with proof of identification and residency. It is much easier to obtain a new permit if you have KEPT the original receipt from the first permit that contains the driver's permit number/bar code.
When will my child be taking behind-the-wheel?
Each student will be driving with an assigned partner during their study hall or PE class once or twice a week. If your child does not have a study hall, then they will drive Tuesday or Thursday during their Driver Ed class period with an assigned partner.
How does my child know when they are assigned to drive?
Every week a new schedule is made and posted on Friday for the following week outside of the Driver Education room (#123). Every week the schedule is different. It is the student's responsibility to check the schedule and arrive on time for the behind-the-wheel lesson.
Does my child have to take Driver Education?
No. Driver Education is not a required class to graduate. Anyone can take the driver's license road test at the DMV once they are the age of 18 if they have completed the 6 hours required of some sort of Driver Education course. However, without taking Driver Education AND behind-the-wheel, insurance prices are much higher for those students once they obtain a license.
What is the Driver Education class prerequisite?
Each student must have passed 2 semesters of 4 classes each prior to enrolling in Driver Education.
Can Freshmen take the Driver Education course?
Yes, but they must have turned 15 years old PRIOR to January 1st.
What grade does my child have to get to pass behind-the-wheel?
C- or better. Behind-the-wheel will appear on the report card as Pass/Fail. Behind-the-Wheel is NOT part of the GPA. The classroom portion IS part of the GPA.
Can my child take Driver Ed through a private facility like Top Driver etc.?
That is your decision to make, however, studies have shown that students who take driver ed privately are 6 times more likely to get into a collision and the cost of LSHS Driver Ed is only $250 where private schools charge much more.
How often does my child attend the classroom phrase of Driver Education?
The classroom phase meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday scheduled school days. (Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for behind-the-wheel.) If you are NOT scheduled to drive that day then you are in a study hall for the period. Study hall days DO NOT count towards your attendance record for Driver Safety and Education class requirement.
How many days is one student allowed to miss throughout the classroom phase of Driver Education?
According to the State of IL, each student is required 30 hours of classroom time so therefore, each student is only allowed to be absent SIX times throughout the entire semester before they are removed from the course. (Tuesdays and Thursdays do NOT count). Their is NOT an attendance requirement for behind-the-wheel.
What if my child forgets his/her permit on a day they were scheduled to drive?
If a student does not have a permit, they CANNOT drive. If a student forgets their permit more than twice, they will be removed from the driving schedule.
Can my student driver be a designated driver (DD) for a parent who has been drinking?
No. That student is driving under YOUR driver's license which is only valid under a certain drinking limit.
Why isn't my child claimed to obtain a driver's license?
If your child was not claimed to the State then a couple of things could be wrong...
1. They did not pay the behind-the-wheel fee (payment of $250 is due to High School secretary, Mrs. Fitzgerald)
2. They did not pass either the classroom phase or the behind-the-wheel phase or both
3. Their permit/driver's license number was entered incorrectly and the correct number needs to be verified.
4. Semester grades must be entered and complete
If my student attends Benet Academy, are their residency requirements to enroll in the course?
During the school year, there are NOT residency requirements/restrictions to enroll in the course. During the summer, however, there ARE residency restrictions. If the town you live in, offer summer Driver Education at the local high school, you can only enroll at the local high school and cannot enroll in Lisle Driver Ed.
What facility can we go for the road test?
All students can go to any facility to complete their road test to obtain a driver's license. Most facilities require an appointment prior to going, please check the corresponding website. Not all facilities offer road tests, make sure where you plan to go does.
What do I need from Mrs. Hamann prior to getting my driver license?
Nothing. Everything is done online, electronically. Please check Driver Education course completion on ilsos.gov website first.
