Mentor Program

Our teachers and staff continually work to provide the best academic experience for students to have success in middle school, high school, and beyond.  Within that classroom setting and larger school community are a lot of tangible and intangible components that help shape students being connected to school and feeling confident that they can be successful in life.

One of those factors for success is students developing a connection with an adult within his/her school.  Studies have shown that one-to-one mentoring relationships have been shown to reduce academic failure, substance use, and delinquency.  The research further indicates that mentoring programs can promote positive outcomes such as improved self-esteem, social skills and knowledge of career opportunities.  Kids who have at least one adult outside their family who cares about them and their future feel more hopeful about their abilities and future.

Oak Ridge staff are committed to building meaningful connections with students.  We have expanded our mentor program to enable more students to participate and provide opportunities for more staff members to connect with kids.  Our building vision is that eventually, each student at Oak Ridge will be offered the opportunity to have an adult mentor for one of their three middle school years.

Mentors will connect with students during the school day approximately three times monthly, either before school, during WOW or flex time, or during lunch.  Meetings will last about 15 minutes, and may involve crafts, goal setting, or a fun food project.  We will also offer three optional school-wide mentor activities this school year (more details to follow on those events).

Students will be selected to participate in the Mentor Program in September; however, the program is completely voluntary.  Students/families may also request to join the Mentor Program.
