Meet the Chapin Band Staff
Mr. Kevin D. Hebert - Director of Bands
Kevin Hebert was named director of Bands at Chapin High School in July of 2010. Mr. Hebert is from Columbia, SC and an alumnus of Irmo High School. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina and received his masters in band conducting from Sam Houston State University through the American Band College program. While at the University of South Carolina, Mr. Hebert served as Vice President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and was also a member of the 2000 World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He is a current member of the Palmetto Concert Band and Carolina Wind Symphony. Before accepting the position at Chapin High School, Mr. Hebert served as the director of bands at Bristol Tennessee High School from 2002-2010. Mr. Hebert is a member of the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, The National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Hebert has also been named as one of School Band and Orchestra’s “Americas 50 Band Directors that Make a Difference” both in Tennessee and South Carolina. Mr. Hebert was named the 2015 Chapin High School Teacher of the Year and District Teacher of the Year for Lexington/Richland School District 5.
Mr. Secaida Howell - CHS Assistant Director / CMS Director of Bands
Secaida Howell is the new Director of Bands at Chapin Middle School and Assistant Director of The Chapin High School Marching Band. Originally from Blythewood, South Carolina, Mr. Howell attended the University of South Carolina where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree. During his time at USC, he was a member of the USC University Band, USC Symphonic Winds, and the USC Marching Band. He is currently a member of the Carolina Wind Symphony. Mr. Howell completed his student teaching internship at Irmo Middle School and Irmo High School in Lexington-Richland School District Five. While completing his internship, he directed the combined middle and high school saxophone choir and was a guest conductor for the Irmo High School Chamber Winds at the SCBDA State Concert Festival.
His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA), the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA), and the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA).
Trey Simmons - CIS Director of Bands
Mr. Simmons is a native of Clover, SC. He earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina and the Masters of Education from Southern Wesleyan University. He is certified in teaching the Gifted and Talented and is endorsed as a Highly Qualified teacher in South Carolina.
Mr. Simmons' students have consistently performed at a high level, earning the highest awards available in the state of South Carolina. His students have also represented District Five as "Rising Stars" in Piccolo Spoleto, USA as well as featured performers at regional and national Band festivals.
Mr. Simmons currently lives in the Chapin area with his wife, Katie, and his daughters, Kaylee and Chloe.
Parker Hollister - Band Staff
Mr. Hollister has been with the Chapin Bands since his teaching internship with Mr. Hebert and working with the 2014 Marching State Championship Marching Band. He also works in the District at Oak Pointe Elementary, teaching elementary music and choir, but enjoys getting involved in the band world on the side. He is the current Teacher of the Year at OPES and was named one of the 3 honor roll Teachers of the Year for Lexington-Richland School District 5. He is honored to teach music to all age levels in the district. Mr. Hollister also plays Tuba in the Carolina Wind Symphony.
Travis Benjamin - Band Staff
Travis Benjamin has been on the band staff at Chapin since 2011, serving as both a music and visual technician. Prior to his current time at Chapin, he served on staff at Chapin High School (2000-2004), Irmo High School (2002-2005, 2010) and Gilbert High School (2009).
Mr. Benjamin is an alum of Irmo High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in 2006. He served as the Director of Bands at Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner, SC from 2006-2009.
Mr. Benjamin is currently a member of the Carolina Wind Symphony. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and an Honorary Member of Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity. He is a past member of the Palmetto Concert Band and South Carolina Band Director’s Association.
Mr. Benjamin is currently a Facilitator I at the Walmart Academy in Laurens, SC, where he trains department managers and assistant managers Walmart stores in Upstate South Carolina and Northeast Georgia.
In his spare time, Mr. Benjamin serves as a whitewater river guide for the Nantahala Outdoor Center on the Nantahala, Pigeon, and French Broad Rivers.
Matthew Jones - Percussion Instructor
Matthew Jones is one of the Southeast’s most prolific and active professional percussionist. Whether playing set for area ensembles and jazz groups and providing services for touring companies or with orchestras both as a tympanist and section percussionist on a variety of instrumentation, Mr. Jones is always on the move. He also coaches SC drum lines for several high school band and teaches collegiate percussion at Columbia College and Presbyterian College. Mr. Jones is a graduate of the University of South Carolina.

Joy Pouncey - Colorguard Instructor
Joy Pouncey is excited to be part of the Chapin Band family! She started marching band in 7th grade and has participated in the Marching Arts at every level since then. She was a member of the Bands of Irmo in high school, marched with The Mighty Sound of the Southeast at the University of South Carolina, Epiphany Winter Guard, and both Carolina Crown and Spirit from JSU Drum and Bugle Corps. Joy has taught guard at several high schools in both South Carolina and North Carolina.
Joy is a proud graduate of the University of School Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Art Education in 2008 and her Interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Art Education in the Fall of 2016. She has nine years of classroom teaching experience in both the middle and high school levels. Joy has experience teaching a wide variety of Art Media including Photography, Stained Glass, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, and is certificated to teach both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Visual Arts.
In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, watching movies, and traveling to NYC. She is a mom to several four-legged children, including 4 dogs, a cat, and a lizard. Ask her about her zoo, she will gladly show you pictures of all of her babies!
