6th grade is a time when students begin to be strongly influenced by their peers. Students have a need for healthy decision-making skills. The student presenters provide the 6th graders with important skills on how to resist negative peer pressure and make healthy choices. As a part of the lessons, students will review the health risks associated with Marijuana. 6th graders are also challenged to think about and anticipate the situations/problems they may be faced with through middle and high school. The goal of the 6th grade health lessons is to provide “booster” sessions that enhance the messages about peer pressure taught in the 5th and 7th grade health classes. High school Peer Leaders facilitate the activities and discussions for these lessons. The 6th graders engage in activities and discussions about decision-making, effects of peer pressure/influence and healthy ways to resist/respond to negative peer pressure.
