The legal definition of AT, as defined by IDEA: “any item, equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized, that’s used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of students with disabilities.”
The legal definition of AT Service, as defined by IDEA: “any service that directly assists a student with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device.” This includes evaluation, coordination, training, and technical assistance.”
AT promotes independence by allowing individuals to accomplish tasks
they were formally unable to achieve or only achieve with great difficulty.
By law, IEP teams must consider the AT needs of every child with a disability
