What is Mu Alpha Theta?

Mu Alpha Theta is a National Mathematics Honor Society encompassing over 65,000 students in more than 1,400 schools. We are dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students.

Activities of the various chapters are quite diverse. Mu Alpha Theta members may participate in regional and state competitions and have the opportunity to meet and learn from interesting speakers. Others tutor students in mathematics. Texas has established state organizations and has annual conventions. Students can assume leadership roles in their local club, state associations and the national organization, which holds a convention every summer.

Topics presented in the Mu Alpha Theta meetings and the interest generated therein aid students in their college mathematics courses. The National High School Mu Alpha Theta is “dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education.”

What are the requirements for membership?

High school students who have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed or are enrolled in a still more advanced course, are eligible for full membership providing their mathematical work was done with distinction. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in Algebra 2 or higher level math courses.  Semester averages in Algebra 1 and higher level math courses must be at least a 4.0 average (on the ABCDF grading scale this shall mean at least a B average in Pre-AP/AP Math courses or an A average in On-level Math courses). Members are responsible for completing 3 hours per semester, 1 tutoring and 2 math hours. Members are also required to attend all chapter meetings (one per month) and pay yearly dues.
