Courtney Kelly graduated from Baylor University with a major in Choral Music Education and a minor in Applied Piano. While at Baylor, Mrs. Kelly was a member of the Baylor A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Dr. Donald Bailey, and studied voice with Dr. Robert Best.
The 2018-2019 school year will mark the beginning of Mrs. Kelly's eleventh year of teaching, all of which has been spent as the choir director at Canyon Ridge. Under her direction, the choir program has seen exponential growth in both size and success. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Risser maintain a program of over 300 students. The choirs of CRMS are award-winning ensembles, continuous sweepstakes recipients at UIL, and the Varsity Treble Choir was a Nationally Commended Choir in the 2013 and 2014 Mark of Excellence Project for the Foundation of Music Education. Additionally, the Varsity Treble Choir was an invited choir at the 2016 Cambiata Institute of America, and in 2017, was an invited choir at the Texas Music Educator's Association, the state's highest honor for choral music.
Mrs. Kelly spent the summer of 2018 serving as the associate director of Amphion Choir. She also served as the head female counselor for Baylor All-State Choir Camp. She is a member of TMEA, TCDA, and TMAA. She served as the inaugural Middle School Vocal Coordinator for Region 32, and currently serves on the UIL Sight Reading Committee. Mrs. Kelly welcomes you to the choir program, and is excited for another stellar year!
Michal Risser graduated from Texas Tech University in December 2013 with a major in Music Education and a minor in Child Psychology. While at Texas Tech, she was a member of the Texas Tech University Choir and performed with them at the TMEA and ACDA conventions. She was also involved in many different activities across campus, including her role as a Texas Tech Ambassador for the College of Visual and Performing Arts and studying abroad in Ireland.
The 2018-2019 school year will be Mrs. Risser's fifth year of teaching which have all been spent at CRMS. Her choirs have exclusively received Sweepstakes at UIL Concert & Sightreading evaluations. Prior to working at Canyon Ridge, she student taught at Cedar Park High School and was a long-term sub Assistant Choir Director at Rouse High School. Before moving to the Austin area, Mrs. Risser worked as a Teaching Artist with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.
Mrs. Risser is an active member of TMEA and TCDA and currently serves as the Region 32 Middle School Secretary. When Mrs. Risser is not teaching music, she loves to travel, read mystery novels, bake really good chocolate chip cookies, and spend as much time at the lake as possible with her family and friends.
