Introduction:
Get a copy of the Gears Vocabulary and the Gears Identification worksheet, use the Internet as a resource to find the definition of the terms in this worksheet.
Enrichment Activity:
Once you have completed the Gears Vocabulary worksheet, learn the basics of gears by launching the Connect It gearing simulation and successfully complete Level 10.
Your goal is to design an electric vehicle to traverse a ramp with the materials provided by the teacher.
When you have finished watching the Gear and Wheels and Gear Basics videos, take the Gears test. When you've scored a 70% or higher on the test, inform your teacher, and you will be issued your materials to begin construction of your electric car.
Instructions:
See the following graphics for a demonstration on designing and constructing your electric powered foam car for speed:
You must score a 70% or higher on the Gears Test
to receive materials to construct the electric car.
Materials
Soldering Safety
Click on the graphic to watch the
soldering safety video
Solder Wires to Switch
Solder a wire to the center terminal
and a wire to an outer terminal
Solder Switch to Battery Holder
If you're smart you can eliminate a step.
Can you discover how?
Solder open wires to the terminals on the electric motor
Testing your Soldering Job
Insert a AA battery in the circuit and
check your work
The motor shaft should rotate
Assemble your Electric Car
Be creative, remember your car
must be designed to traverse a steep ramp
Ensure the gears are in contact with each other as shown
*Note the gear ratio shown may not be sufficient to climb a steep ramp.
Try to engineer your car to drive straight, this may be helpful when you're trying to climb a steep ramp.
Conclusion
You need to develop the knowledge and skill of gearing to be competent designing and constructing vehicles for speed and torque
Good Luck!
