Pre-pitch stance
Both feet are square to plate, toes pointed slightly in. Pressure on the inside of knees. Note the relaxed grip, “knocking knuckles” aligned.
#1. Load & Stride
Lower body: This batter has already loaded from leg lift into stride ("toe touch"). Front foot is in a closed position (ankle leads towards pitcher, not toe). The front heel is slightly up. She stays tall, shoulders and hips square to plate.
Upper body: Hands are high & close to her body at separation, as if a rubber band stretches from hands to front foot.
#2. Drive
Lower body: Big muscles (legs & hips) lead hands into drive. Foot, knee, & hip all push forward, followed by hands last. As back leg and hips push forward (back heel lift), the front side is firm. Front heel slams down. Front foot is now “open” at 45 degree angle.
Upper body: Hands slide knob of bat inside the path of the ball; bat head remains back (bat lag) until wrists snap it to point of contact in the next step. Note how this batter's nails are to the sky (palm up, palm down).
#3. Hammer
At the point of contact ("barrel to ball"), this batter's elbows are slightly bent, like the frame of a house / “power L”, still in the palm up, palm down position. Bat angle corresponds to location of pitch. Her face is tracking down on the ball.
#4. Extend
Bat points towards the location the ball should travel (corresponding with pitch). Face is still tracking the ball, chin over back shoulder. Arms are long through the zone, in the shape of a "power V". Lower half is pushing into a firm front side.
#5. Pull high
This batter has a late wrist roll to finish fast & high over her shoulder.
Rolled wrists, nose over front foot, off-balance (fooled by change up)
Back shoulder dropping; arms "casting" (getting away from the body & straightening before extension)
No push from back side
Front side is not firm
(No resistance = a power "leak")
