What's on in English class:
The Gothic Universe
We will start your senior year by exploring the Gothic Universe. Both writers from the 1800s and modern ones are going to form the basis of this course.
From the Romantic Era:
Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" and his beuatiful poems "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven" will be part of the course. We are going to read excerpts about The Modern Prometheus from Mary Shelley's famous novel Frankenstein. These texts are part of the syllabus along with an exploration of what constitutes the literary theory of the Romantic Period to which both writers belong.
Of more modern writers Stephen King and H. P. Lovecraft will be included.
Apart from the theories of the Romantic Period, we will also look at the elements that make up the Gothic, we are going to look at Freud's division of the mind and examine the concept of 'the uncanny'.
Last but not least we are going to watch Alfred Hitchcock's famous film Psycho and see how the Gotich can be projected on the screen.
