What Happens in a Reading Group?

Reading groups run 4-5 days a week for 30-45 minutes a time.

Groups typically run during a grade level/classroom's x-block time during the regular school day.

Students are placed in a group of 4-5 and groups take place in a reading specialist's room, away from the DISTRACTIONS of the classroom.

Each group with each specialist will look different according to the students' needs. Some things you might see being taught in groups are:

  • Phonological awareness skills using a modified Heggerty program (hearing & manipulating the sounds in spoken language without any visual input)
  • Fundations phonics skills (matching sounds to letters, noticing letter patterns)
  • Sight words using multi-sensory techniques from Wilson and Fundations from grade/level appropriate lists
  • Guided reading with leveled texts helps with genre study and comprehension strategies
