Curriculum

I teach 7th grade language arts. During the year, we teach several overall themes as units: Characters with Character, School, Letter to a Utah Legislator (integrated unit with Utah studies), Science or Fiction, and Literature Reflects Life. Along with these units, we integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening, and inquiry.

We have eight "essential standards" that we teach in 7th grade:

    1. Comprehend a variety of texts proficiently. (Read, read, read!)

    2. Produce, edit, and publish high quality writing. (Write, write, write!)

    3. Find and infer central ideas and key details from a text and support conclusions with textual evidence.

    4. Comprehend, analyze, and create arguments in multiple formats.

    5. Effectively find, evaluate, and use, and cite outside sources in writing.

    6. Analyze how text structure contributes to meaning and purpose, and tailor writing to address purpose and audience.

    7. Compare and contrast ideas within the text, between the text and other texts, and between the text and the world.

    8. Determine word meanings and analyze the effect of word choice on writing.

The Common Core Standards - Many states in the U.S. have already adopted the Common Core standards. Visit this site to learn more about what they are and why they are being implemented in so many states.

Jordan District's Language Arts Core Website - Our district has written student "I Can" statements to match the Common Core. We plan to use these "I Can" statements in our teaching.
