The table that follows presents the skill categories and related skills that students should develop during the AP Human Geography course. These skills form the basis of tasks on the AP Exam.

Below are graphic organizers, note-taking guides, reading strategies, etc. that you will need to become familiar with in order to ensure your success in AP Human Geography this year. Many of these skills are also transferable to other classes so if you use them consistently, you will find that you will find success in all your classes.

Free Response Questions (FRQs):

  • Task Verbs Used in Free Response Questions:
    • Identify: Indicate or provide information about a specified topic, without elaboration or explanation. (1-2 sentences)
    • Define: Provide a specific meaning for a word or concept. (1-3 sentences. Always give an example!)
    • Describe: Provide the relevant characteristics of a specified topic. (ACE the Question; 3-5 strong sentences)
    • Explain: Provide information about how or why a relationship, process, pattern, position, or outcome occurs, using evidence and/or reasoning. (ACE the Question; 3-5 strong sentences. No evidence or no explanation, no point.)
    • Compare: Provide a description of explanation of similarities and/or differences. (ACE the Question; 3-5 sentences.)
