Cross Country Day 5

Post date: Sep 19, 2012 5:24:26 PM

Today was a busy day of things to see with little driving.  (I know we were all excited to have a break from driving!)  We spent a few hours in Nauvoo, learning about the pioneers.  Then we went down to Carthage Jail to see where Joseph Smith was killed.  Then we went on a cruise on the Mississippi River.  What a wonderful day!

We spent the night in Fort Madison, so in the morning we went and found the fort.

The Mississippi River

This is the bridge we crossed to get to Illinois.  The top is for cars, the bottom is for the train!

Welcome to Nauvoo!

Capstone from the original Nauvoo Temple.

The boys learned how to make rope and weave rugs.

We spent some time playing games and dressing up like pioneers.

We spent some time in the Black Smith shop and learned how to make horse shoes.  James was the lucky kid who got to take the finished horse shoe home.

We stopped at the graves of Joseph Smith, Emma Smith and Hyrum Smith.

Our next destination was Carthage Jail.  We went on a tour and learned about Joseph Smiths last days.

On to Missouri.

We went to the little town of Hannibal for a cruise on the Mark Twain river boat.
