ENL stands for English as a New Language. Students in ENL speak other languages at home and are learning English as a new language. ENL teachers work with classroom teachers to help make lessons more understandable. We help students improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

When parents register at a NY State school, they must complete a home language questionnaire (HLQ). If a language other than English is listed, an ENL teacher interviews the child and family to determine if the student needs support with their English. A test (the NYSITELL) is given to find the child's language level, and they begin the ENL program. Please see information about the levels below.

Every spring, ENL students take a state test called the NYSESLAT. Similar to the NYSITELL, it determines a student's language level. Students who score a level 5 are considered proficient. These students continue to receive some support and test accommodations for two years. Once those two years are complete, the student officially exits the program.
