Field Excursions Activities
Field excursions are an important aspect of our Department's pedagogy to promote experiential learning. Students are encouraged to explore monuments, historical sites, libraries, and museums to develop an understanding about the varied nature of source material. Field tours are valuable tools for inculcating a sense of methodology of history. Simultaneously, physical inspection of sources at hand also develop a sense of responsibility towards preserving the past. Field excursions are often inbuilt in to the structure of courses and teachers' work plans, both, for the B. A. Honours and B. A. Multidisciplinary courses. The following field excursions have been cited for the period in between March 2021 - May 2022.
Educational Excursion to Jhansi, Orchha, Gwalior and Agra
The Department of History, Indraprastha College for Women organized an educational trip from 7th to 9th October 2025 covering Jhansi, Orchha, Gwalior, and Agra under the TIC-ship of Dr. Rajeev Gupta and accompanied by the faculty members Dr. Asha Shukla Choubey, Dr. Pragati Mohapatra, Dr. Ruchika Singh, Dr. Shail Bala Mishra, Dr. Rachna, Dr. Archana, and Ms. Bhawna. With the constant encouragement and leadership of our faculty members, students not only enhanced their understanding of historical narratives but also developed a deeper appreciation for India’s cultural and architectural heritage.
Educational Excursion to Rakhigarhi
The Department of History, Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, organized an educational excursion to Rakhigarhi on 10th September 2025 as part of the academic engagement with the Indus Valley Civilization. The excursion was attended by 47 students of B.A. (Hons) History, 1st Year, along with around 14 senior students of B.A. Programme, accompanied by five faculty members.
Visit to Delhi Vidhan Sabha
Under the guidance of Dr. Rajeev Gupta (TIC, Department of History) the students of Indraprastha College for Women visited the Delhi Vidhan sabha on 26th August 2025 as part of an educational tour. The purpose of this visit was to provide students with an opportunity to witness the functioning of democratic institutions and gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative processes.
Visit to Humayun's Tomb Complex & Museum
The Ārāmgāh of Jannat Āshyānī field lecture on Mughal architecture with special reference to the Mughal waterfront gardens was conducted for students of Semester V on 24 October 2024. Forty two students and six teachers of the Department of History were involved in this excursion from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Field Trip to Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial
On 19th October, 2023 the Semester-l and Semester-lll (B.A. Programme and B.A. Honours) students of Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, who are enrolled for SEC, Museum and Museology went on a field trip to Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial at 26 Alipur Road, Delhi. The College provided the College Bus for the convenience of the students. The purpose of the visit was to make the students understand Ambedkar, the prominent social reformer and the architect of Indian Constitution, his contribution towards the nation.
Exploring Sacred Kingship in the Architecture of the Mughals at Fatehpur Sikri & Agra
Forty-three students of B.A. (H) History Semester VI, accompanied by six teachers of their Department, visited Mughal monuments at Fatehpur Sikri and Agra during 23 & 24 March 2023 to explore the form and meaning of monumental constructions of the Mughals. The field excursion was subsidised by the College & supported by the Archaeological Survey of India. The ASI supported this important field visit by waiving the visitors' fees that is charged at all monuments visited by our group in Fatehpur Sikri & Agra.
Exploring the Qutub Complex
Eighty-five students of the B.A. Programme Semester I, and three faculty members of the department of history, explored the Qutub complex to understand the evolution of the architectural history of the city of Delhi during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This excursion was undertaken on 10 February 2023 towards fulfilment of a field component in the the syllabus of GE Course Delhi through the Ages: The Making of its' Early Modern History. The College facilitated entry tickets for all students and teachers.
Instruments of Accession & Merger: The Journey of Integration
Forty-eight students of B.A. Programme, Semester II (English & Hindi medium) were escorted by Dr. Avantika Sharma and Ms. Shailbala Mishra of the History Department on 12 May 2022 to view a special exhibition curated by the National Archives of India on the occasion of their 132nd Foundation Day and under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. After viewing the exhibit the students interacted with the curators to discuss the various aspects of the subject on display.
Exploring the field virtually: Pandemic files March 2020 - March 2021
During the lock down phase students were introduced to the field virtually.
Students of B.A. Programme were taken for a virtual tour of the British Museum by Dr. Akhila Mathew, who is their instructor for the SEC paper on Archives & Museums, via IPCW Google Classroom on 20 February 2021.
Dr. Meenakshi Khanna guided her students of B.A. Honours Generic Elective course on Delhi through the ages: The making of its early modern history, through two virtual tours about Dihli-i kuhna on 21 January 2021 and Shahjahanabad on 1 March 2021 over the IPCW Google Classroom Platform.
The B.A. Programme Semester III students reading a core course on History of India c. 1200-1700 A.D. virtually visited the Qutb Complex, along with their teacher Ms. Ruchika Sharma, on 19 October 2020 via the IPCW Google Classroom Platform.
The B.A. History Honours students of Semester III reading a course in Archives & Museums with Dr. Avantika Sharma were taken for virtual tour of the Indian Museum, Kolkata on 20 August, 2020 and the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum on 22 August 2020, via the IPCW Google Classroom Platform.
Heritage walk to the Mutiny Memorial
On 1 February 2020, the History Society organized a heritage walk to the Mutiny Memorial in Delhi. The B.A. Honours and B.A. Programme students of the GE course, ‘Delhi through the Ages’ participated in this walk. The aim was to explore the historical civil lines area, that is home to various medieval, modern, and ancient monuments that are discussed in the syllabus. They were accompanied by Mr. Chandrabhan P. Yadav, and Dr. Vinayak. The walk was led by Dr. Pragati Mohapatra.

Field visits during the International Students Workshop IPCW-Gottingen Workshop
On 5 January 2020 the visiting batch of students from the University Gottingen and IPCW explored the historical and structural remains on the Northern Ridge in the vicinity of the College. The walk was conducted by Dr. Pragati Mohapatra.
On 6 January 2020 the visiting batch of students from Gottingen along with the students of IPCW toured the Basti Nizamuddin, the medieval monuments in the vicinity, and spent time observing the activities at the Dargah of Nizamuddin Awliya.
The Qila i mu`alla: Form, context & meaning of the imperial palace fortress of Shahjahanbad
The students of B.A. History Honours, Semester V visited the Red Fort Complex on 2 November 2019. This was a field lecture devoted to reading the meaning of form and context in architecture with special reference to the Mughal expressions of sovereignty in design and ritual conduct of the Mughal Emperor. This lecture was conducted by Dr. Meenakshi Khanna.
Reconstructing the first Jama` masjid of Delhi The Qutb Complex
On 2 November 2019 a group of 93 students were taken to a trip to the Qutb complex. The students were shown the Qubbat al Islam mosque, Qutb Minar, Alai Darwaza, Madrasa of Ala-ud-din Khalji, remains of the Alai Minar, the tomb of Iltutmish and a 16th century Mughal mosque. The students were explained construction techniques of raising corbelled and true domes, reasons and implications of re-use and the contesting narratives surrounding the complex. Through this exercise the students also learnt how to relate with their heritage and were able to comprehend monuments as palimpsests, carrying imprints of many histories.
Exploring history & tourism at the Qutb Complex
An excursion was organised to the Qutb Complex on 30 October 2018 for two batches of B.A. Programme Semester III (Hindi Medium) and B.A. Programme Semester III (English Medium) for the courses History and Tourism and History of India (1200-1700) respectively. Dr. Vinayak, Dr. Subir Dey and Ms. Ruchika Sharma coordinated this excursion.
Qila-i mubarak as an expression of Mughal sovereignty
A field lecture on Mughal architecture with special reference to Shahjahanabad was organized for students of Semester V by Dr. Meenakshi Khanna. The students had a guided tour of the Qila-i mubarak, the Red Fort on 25 September 2018.
Sair-i Nizamuddin
Students of Semester IV & VI went on a cultural heritage tour Sair-E Nizamuddin, which was organized by a Self Help Group (SHG) of community heritage leaders specialized in conducting heritage walk in the Nizamuddin Basti area since 2010 as facilitated by Aga Khan Development Network, on 22 March 2018.
Heritage Walk on the Northern Ridge
Heritage Walk to the Mutiny Memorial, Northern Ridge was conducted by Dr. Pragati Mohapatra on 8 November 2017. Some other medieval monuments were also covered in this walk. The students were also accompanied by Mr. Chandrabhan Pratap Yadav of the Department.
The Mughal Waterfront Gardens & the Ārāmgāh of Padshah Humayun
Field lecture for BAH SEC I & III was conducted by Dr. Meenakshi Khanna on the Mughal Waterfront gardens at the Humayun's Tomb Complex on 28 October 2017.
The Tomb of the Nawab Safdarjung of Awadh
Students of B.A. Honours Semester III visited Safdarjung's Tomb near Lodhi Road on 8 November 2016 to supplement the theoretical component of the SEC course on Understanding Heritage. The excursion was conducted by the course instructor Dr. Pragati Burman. The students were also asked to write a report on this visit for discussion in class.
The symbolism of Mughal tomb architecture & Ārāmgāh of Jannat Āshyānī
The Ārāmgāh of Jannat Āshyānī field lecture on Mughal architecture with special reference to the Mughal waterfront gardens was conducted for students of Semester VI on 3 March 2016.
