History Society

About us

History Society is the academic society of the Department with four elected student representatives who work under the guidance of faculty adviser/s. The Society is a major exponent of academic engagement which is student centric & supports experiential & participative learning for enhancing knowledge & skill. A special section of the Society is devoted to disseminating activities of the Society on social media platforms like the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. These are significant tools to connect with our alumnae.

Every semester, the Society organizes talks by leading historians and by researchers doing new and interesting work. The Society conducts paper presentations by students on themes of historical and contemporary interest. It also organizes conferences and workshops to which eminent historians are invited from different disciplines and universities. The Society has recently hosted an International Students Workshop on the theme Sufism in South Asia: A View from Delhi in collaboration with the Institute for Iranian Studies at the University of Gottingen. It has also organised a Students Writing Workshop in collaboration with the Ashoka University. Some of the National Seminars that have been organised in the past by the Department have focused on important themes such as Gendered Pasts, Masculinist Frames; The Temple in Early Medieval South India and Confrontations and Negotiations: Religious Identities in Indian History.

The Department has developed a special activity Engaging with Heritage to give students a hands on experience in developing the tools of historian's craft. These activities are dedicated to three specific areas of engagement, namely, the National Archives of India, Archaeological Survey of India and INTACH. The 'Activities' tab on the sidebar will lead to dedicated pages with details of specific activities.

The Society organizes activities which acquaint students with multiple histories of Delhi and its neighbourhood. Every year students visit historical monuments and sites like the Qutb, Hauz Khas, Tughlaqabad, Nizamuddin's complex, Humayun’s Tomb and Shahjahanabad. A regular feature of the Society's outdoor activities includes field excursions to museums, galleries and archives in the Delhi NCR, such as the National Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art and National Archives of India. We try to be inclusive in our tours and encourage students with special abilities to join us.

The History Society has organized educational trips to places of historical importance. Such special excursions are usually preceded by talks and slide shows by experts in the field to introduce students to the sites they are scheduled to visit. In recent years the Society has organized trips to many significant sites including world heritage sites like Ajanta and Ellora, Hampi, Aihole, Badami, Pattadakkal, Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Mount Abu, Agra, Sikandra, Fatehpur Sikri and Khajuraho.

Feature films and documentaries of historical interest are regularly screened and discussed. Sometimes, documentary film makers are invited to initiate and discuss their work. In recent years, the Society has organized poetry reading session on the theme of 'Dalit Narratives’. In addition, the Society has also organized essay writing and poetry competitions on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav. Radio talks and performances including Dastangoi featuring Dastan-e Taqseem-e Hind that narrated tales of partition from different perspectives, Dastan Alice Ki, Dastan-e Chauboli and Dastan-e Azhar Jadu, all directed by Mahmood Faroqui, have been performed in the College.

We are proud to share the academic and creative initiative of our students and faculty in the organisation and publication of two significant contributions, namely, the Department's Journal NAZARIYAT and Students' Magazine REMINISCENCE .
