Mission & Vision

Our mission is to improve access to affordable, quality healthcare for the last mile. We envision a world where every person and every village is connected with a doctor.

Background

The WHO estimates that over 400 million people lack access to essential medical care globally, mostly in underserved rural communities. For these rural communities, poor geographical and financial access coupled with a lack of health education creates an accumulated disease burden. In order to receive care, rural patients turn to local “quack” doctors and faith healers, most of whom do not even have basic secondary education. Otherwise, they have to travel long distances to the nearest town or city to see a doctor, spending significant time and money doing so. Due to the delay in care seeking, conditions often go undiagnosed in the early stages and require expensive tertiary care as they progress. Approximately 39 million people in low and middle income countries are tipped into extreme poverty each year because of such health-related expenses. With the increasing availability of mobile networks and mobile internet even in remote areas we now have new opportunities to provide healthcare. Telemedicine provides an opportunity by connecting doctors in urban areas to patients in rural areas to provide healthcare.

The Intelehealth Platform

We at Intelehealth have developed an open source telemedicine platform that empowers local community health workers (CHWs) in rural communities to facilitate tele-consultations with remote doctors. It enables them to gather high quality clinical history and conduct clinically-relevant physical exams. Intelehealth can be used by hospitals, community health programs & governments to expand the reach of health services to ensure that vital primary care reaches remote and rural populations.

Contributing guidelines:

1. Make sure to document everything clearly and in detail - good documentation sets us up for success

2. Don't be afraid to modify and update documentation as the platform evolves

3. Explain things in clear, simple language

4. Wherever possible use tables, diagrams and charts

5. When documenting think - if someone unfamiliar with this were to read this, would they be able to recreate my work?

6. Documenting is boring, we know, but its really important to ensure project continuity
