Concert Band

Independence Sr. High is proud to have been selected as the 2011 Class 3A IBA Honor Band. This is the Independence Sr. High Concert Band’s sixth invitation to perform at the IBA Conference: 2011, 2008, 2005, 2002, 1999, and 1996. Our directors have adopted the standard philosophy that our programs should be well rounded. We emphasize Concert Band as the core of our program, as exemplified by our strong All-State audition program and solid Solo/Ensemble participation. The Independence Sr. High concert band has earned 19 consecutive division one ratings at the IHSMA Large Group Contest. We also strive for excellence in marching, jazz, and pep band. Independence Schools currently has three band instructors with Paul Upmeyer teaching 5-6 band, Karl Smith teaching 7-8 band, and David Lang teaching 9-12 band.
