Students at East Elementary joined other students across Iowa in choosing a winner for the 2022-2023 Goldfinch Award. Teachers will read from the list of the nominated books throughout the year, and students will vote for their favorite book in late March.
Goldfinch Award History During the 2007-2008 school year, the librarians in the Cedar Rapids Community School district started talking about the need for a state wide award from the students of Iowa for books written for K-2 students. Books were suggested by students and reviewed by a committee to narrow down the list. The group decdided to name the award the Goldfinch Award after the state bird of Iowa.
The first year of the award (2008-2009), the winner was If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen.
The second year of the award (2009-2010), the winner was I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll.
The Award has been approved by the Iowa Library Association and the Iowa Association of School Librarians for the 2010-2011 school year, and voting for this year’s winner will take place in March.
