The behavior system that is effective for my second graders, is the Clip Chart System. This system promotes positive behavior choices within the classroom and school. All students start each day on the color green. Students have many opportunities to ‘clip up’ in a school day if they are making positive choices and following the school rules. Students ‘clip up’ through the colors: pink, blue, and purple. When they reach to the very top of the chart, they get to pick a class coupon of their choice! Students are also rewarded with Hawk Tickets throughout the day. These tickets can be saved to pick from the cart of prizes or used for a different reward, depending on how many they have. Each quarter the choices change. It is the students’ responsibility to keep their tickets safe in their designated bag until it is time to turn them in.
Behavior Plan: Consequences and Rewards
In conjunction with our school’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Program, students will have a clip they move based on their behavior for the day. Don’t be alarmed if your child doesn’t move their clip up every day! This is okay. Our days get busy and unexpected things happen. I believe in providing a positive atmosphere in the classroom. The Clip Chart System works well with this belief in that it is motivating for students to earn positive rewards rather than negative consequences . Kids love to know what is expected of them and they want to do well. Some of the positive reinforcements that I use to recognize good decision making are: Hawk Pride Tickets that are cashed in weekly for a small prize off of the school’s Hawk Pride Cart, VIP Seat, class coupons, sucker and more.
Consequences are a result of poor decision making. The following sequence will be used to address a student’s poor decision making:
Please encourage your child to make smart choices each day. Remind him/her of the importance of following the rules. Reinforcement at home plays a crucial role in helping your child develop good habits in this area.
