Players who are hoping to play on the 2021-2022 Hoover High School tennis teams need to read through the information below and complete the Google form at the end in order to sign up for a tryout spot.
Players who hope to try out must first have completed all of the required athletics paperwork before filling out the Tryout Sign-up Form at the bottom of this page. And for those who have completed this paperwork in previous years, they must be sure that have done so again this school year and that their physical is good through at least September of 2021
Players who have questions about tryouts should email Coach Lochamy (rlochamy@hoover.k12.al.us) or swing by his room (C228).
Players who do not sign up for tryouts (by completing the Google form at the bottom of this page) by the end of the school day on Monday, Sept 6th will not be allowed to try out for this year's team. (This includes players who are already guaranteed a spot on this year's team. EVERYONE intending to play on this year's team must sign up for tryouts by the deadline.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Players who make the tennis team will need to have a schedule during the second semester that allows them to start practice at the beginning of 8th period. For most players, this just requires a simple change of schedule that is not hard to work out. Every once in a while, though, there's a player for whom this is an issue. If you have questions about scheduling and whether or not such a change would work for you, please stop by and see Coach Lochamy in C228 (or email him at rlochamy@hoover.k12.al.us).
When and where are tryouts?
Tryouts will be held at the courts here at Hoover High School.
Boys' tryouts will be held from Monday, Sept. 13th, through Friday, Sept. 17th.
Girls' tryouts will be held from Monday, Sept. 20th, through Friday, Sept. 24th.
What time do tryouts start and end each day?
We'll begin promptly at 4:00 each day.
Tryouts will last until 6:00 each day.
What do players need to bring to tryouts?
A racquet
A bottle of water (or some sort of sports drink) that they can refill.
Although it is not mandatory, players are asked to please bring two unopened canisters of tennis balls on the first day of tryouts. (Note: These will be used during the tryout process and will not be returned to the players regardless of the outcome of the tryouts.)
How do tryouts work?
Tryouts are based on head-to-head competition between players. Coaches aren't selecting players for the team; players will earn their way onto the team by winning more points than their competitors. Depending on the number of players trying out and on the number of available slots on the team, cuts will be made throughout the week as players separate themselves from the field through head-to-head competition. Click here for more details on how this competition will work.
Do players need to be at the tryouts every day of the week?
Yes. There's only one exception (covered in the next bullet point), but other than that, all players hoping to play on the team need to plan to be at tryouts from 4:00-6:00 each day of the tryout week.
Here's the exception to that rule: The following players have already earned their spot on this year's team (by virtue of having played in the top four seeds on last year's team) and will not need to report to tryouts:
Boys: Isaac Hwangpo, Samuel Sellers, and Gavin Patton
Girls: Kristina Hwangpo
If you have further questions or concerns at this point, please take a few minutes to read through this FAQ's document that I've put together to help clarify and explain a few common questions that come up around tryout time related to our program's policies and procedures. And if after reading through that material you still have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me at rlochamy@hoover.k12.al.us.
If you have read all of the information above and you are hoping to play on this year's tennis team AND you have completed all of the required paperwork this school year AND are in good standing with your physical through the end of September, please fill out this form so that Coach Lochamy and Coach Fulmer will have a record of your intent:
(Note: the form is designed to be completed by the prospective player, and he/she must be signed into Google using his/her official hcs email address--on his/her Chromebook, for example--in order to access the form.)
