Dr. Marcus Martinez Award
The meaning of life is to find your gift, The purpose of life is to give it away”. No one did this better than Dr. Marcus Martinez. For over 20 years, Dr. Martinez dedicated his “gift”, of skills and knowledge to helping others. Whether it was the thousands of patients he provided medical care, support and comfort to or his commitment to the fight against PFOA’s and protecting not just his hometown community but those across the nation, Dr. Martinez, left the world better than he found it. Dr. Martinez believed we all have a responsibility to find and develop whatever our unique ability may be and use it to make a positive impact in the world around us no matter how far away we travel or close to home we stay.
The Dr. Marcus Martinez Find Your Gift Award wishes to support graduating seniors, who are striving to find and use their gift to make a positive impact. This award is not exclusive to just seniors planning to pursue higher education as Dr. Martinez knew, just like in medicine, there is never just one path to success and no gift is to big or small to make a difference.
Requirements:
Please use 1-2 page essay format to describe what your gift is or may be. Include the road you have traveled and will continue to travel to develop this gift and how you plan to “give it away”.
Suggested but not required letter of support from faculty or community member.

The League is proud to offer the Jim Sable Environment & Conservation Education Scholarship, in honor of its founder.
Jim recognized that education came before anything else. He would always ask his students if they had gotten their homework done, asked about the grades, and encourage them to succeed academically. As a student mentor, Jim felt that it was his duty to ensure that nothing interfered with students’ academic progress.
With over 50 years of experience as a firearms safety instructor, Jim has also long recognized the importance of hunting, outdoor shooting sports, and other outdoor activities. He has always championed the symbiotic relationship between conservation funding and outdoor shooting sports activities, and that hunters and outdoor shooting sport enthusiasts are the best stewards of our environment. It is with that relationship in mind that the League’s scholarship program was established.
Thirty-five (35) $1,000 scholarships are available to high school seniors who participate in the League and plan to further their education with an eye towards an environment, natural resources, and/or conservation-related career.

Richard Allen Brownell, Jr. was a 1990 graduate of Hoosick Falls Central School and a talented writer who went on to publish 11 books, one off-Broadway play, and hundreds of articles and other creative works over the course of his life. Following graduation from NYU, he had a storied career working with publishers including Samuel French, Newsweek, Thomson Reuters, and Cengage Learning. He wrote for several magazines, including American History Magazine and Cobblestone. He was also the founder of Mr. Rick’s History, an online American history magazine. Richard's life ended far too soon and he knew he had many more stories to tell. He understood that by sharing opportunities for writers, the light that is ignited by Story will shine on indefinitely.
