Occupational therapists specialize in helping people of all ages become more independent in their jobs of life. Young children's occupations or jobs include play and learning as older children's jobs include learning and attainment of pre-vocational skills. Occupational therapy in a school environment aims to assist a child in increasing their independence in order to access their educational program. This may be achieved through remediation, compensation and/or modification. Remediation provides students with an opportunity to learn or relearn a skill via strengthening of component skills. Compensation is when strategies or equipment is provided to complete a task with greater independence. Modifications are changes to the task or the environment in which the task is being completed. Any student who receives direct occupational therapy service will have goals and objectives documented to guide and monitor intervention. If you have questions or concerns about your child's school performance, please communicate these concerns to their classroom teacher so they can guide you to your next step.
