My name is Frances Shaw-Yu. I am the 中文 (zhōngwén; Mandarin) teacher at Crocker Middle School. Students call me Xiao Laoshi. "Xiao" sounds like Shaw in English and is my last name 蕭 in Mandarin. "Laoshi" pretty much sounds like how it is spelled and it means teacher 老師 in Mandarin.
This is my 12th year teaching at Crocker. Before coming to Crocker, I taught 3 years of high school Mandarin in a Bay Area high school and 4 years of English in Taiwan. I received my master's degree in foreign language education from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and bachelor's degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages in National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan.
After many years of teaching Mandarin, I have come to believe that Mandarin can be accessible to students of all ages through a series of fun and engaging activities. The continuing goal of my teaching career is to bring fun and engaging activities into the classroom and make learning happen through carefully sequenced activities to help lay a good foundation for language acquisition.
If you need to contact me, my information is on the left side of this page. We welcome you to Crocker Mandarin where learning can be a fun and rewarding experience!
