KOREA'S HISTORY: The introduction of "Hongul", a 24-character, phonetic alphabet, in 1180, by King Hongul, who wished his countrymen to be able to read and write more easily than the Chinese 1,000 character alphabet allowed. He was beloved by his subjects, but some official opposed it!
