STEM Summer Series and the Arts "S3": In partnership with Nā Pua Noʻeau, 6th-11th grade students will learn about the STEM fields through hands-on learning and place-based curricula that utilizes the engineering design process and scientific discovery. Programs will provide an introduction to skills training and professional development and students will explore a University campus, meet various Native Hawaiian and STEM organizations, and learn about college opportunities. S3 culminates in a hoʻike where students will present their projects and cultural activities to their ʻohana and community members.
Our STEM tracks this Summer 2021 include:
1. Mālama ʻĀina (environmental science)
2. Nā Hana Wilikī (engineering)
3. Kālaimeaola (biological science)
4. Nā Hana Lolouila (computer science)
Program Dates: June 7-August 13, 2021
Application Deadline: MARCH 21, 2021 Sunday (by 11:59pm HST)
Program Benefits:
Paid tuition for a 3-credit, degree-required summer STEM course or Calculus 1, 2, or 3 summer course (MATH 241, 242, 243)
Participate in faculty-driven STEM research at the UH Mānoa campus
Educational stipend upon successful completion of the program
Program Details:
Enroll in one degree-required STEM course (3 credits)
Perform research 15-20 hours/week
Participate in Professional Development & Cultural workshops
Design and present a formal research presentation
Attend a summer weekend huakaʻi (location TBA)
Eligibility:
Priority consideration will be given to applicants who meet the following -
Native Hawaiian students majoring in STEM degrees at UH Mānoa
Native Hawaiian students majoring/intending to major in STEM degrees transferring to UH Mānoa from Honolulu CC, Kapiʻolani CC, Leeward CC, or Windward CC
Native Hawaiian STEM students who have not performed research or industry internship prior to summer 2021
Students of Alaska Native, American Indian, or Polynesian descent, women, and other underrepresented minorities in STEM are also encouraged to apply.
