The Program
NHSEMP's main component is the undergraduate STEM Scholars Program, offered during the academic year. Students who are willing to put in the extra time, effort, and energy into meeting their academic goals can participate in the in the program in various ways. There is a suite of activities designed to ensure our students maintain successful academic progress towards their STEM degree. Specifically, the STEM Scholars Program focuses on:
Program advising and student services are offered by the NHSEMP staff;
Peer mentoring support is provided by NHSEMP upper-level students;
NHSEMP STEM Center is a place for students to build pilina, study, and participate in NHSEMP activities;
ENGR 100: Introductory to Engineering is a first-year course that provides freshman students an overview of the engineering field, success strategies of studying engineering, internship & career opportunities, exploring the relationship between culture & science, and participating in a hands-on engineering design project;
Tutoring and recitation sessions are offered for gateway courses such as Trigonometry, Calculus I-IV, Chemistry I & II, Physics I-III, Biology, Introduction to Programming, Organic Chemistry, Statics, and Dynamics;
Research opportunities and internships are available on-campus, in Hawaii, and abroad.
Advising and workshops are offered by the NHSEMP staff and academic partners;
Financial assistance for educational-related activities is available on a semester basis (per available program funding).
General meetings are held once a month - students are provided with program updates, academic opportunities, and building community;
NHSEMP's 'Oi Ka Na'auao Spotlight Series provides professional development workshops, interaction with guest speakers (NHSEMP alumni, professional scientists & engineers, community leaders, informational speakers), and cultural engagement opportunities to build awareness of and identity as a native in STEM;
Participation in local & national conferences is strongly recommended and NHSEMP encourages students to take advantage of these opportunities;
Networking with peers, faculty/staff, and the STEM & local community is strongly encouraged - NHSEMP provides various activities such as Professional Development workshops, speaker series, huaka'i, and more that provide students with opportunities to build their professional tool kit and enhance their skills & knowledge.
Participation in outreach events and service projects help link STEM to the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island communities. Student participation in these activities promotes awareness for local projects, STEM disciplines, and college & career pathways. Students also gain leadership, public speaking, and mentoring skills;
Participation in student projects is highly encouraged. Student projects are invaluable learning experiences and great opportunities that provide hands-on learning and application of classroom knowledge.
