Program Description:
2025 NHSEMP Freshman Bridge is an 8-week summer program for traditional, incoming University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa first-year students interested in majoring in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. The following are encouraged to apply:
Strong interest in / connection to Hawaiian culture, values, and relationship to STEM
Minimal STEM research experience, but highly motivated to learn
Program Dates: June 23-August 14, 2025

Faculty-driven STEM research experience (approx. 15-20 hours/week) in on-campus laboratories
Weekly NHSEMP ʻOi Ka Naʻauao Spotlight Series (professional development, cultural engagement, guest speakers)
Site visits to STEM industry and culturally significant locations
Hawaiian Studies 107 courses for required college credit
Design and deliver a formal research presentation for the annual NHSEMP Summer Symposium (August 2025)
Gain research experience, laboratory skills, communication, and team work through faculty-driven STEM research
Earn required UH Mānoa course credits
Receive meal points for UH Mānoa on-campus lunch (M-F) throughout the duration of the program
Learn to navigate the UH System and get a step ahead toward your first semester at UH Mānoa
Explore the connection between STEM and Hawaiʻi's culture
Earn an educational stipend upon successful completion of the program
Expand your network and community of STEM peers, mentors, faculty, and industry!
Spaces are available for traditional incoming, UH Mānoa first-year students interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). The following are encouraged to apply:
Strong interest in / connection to Hawaiian culture, values, and relationship to STEM
Minimal STEM research experience, but highly motivated to learn
Complete and submit your 2025 Freshman Bridge Application packet by April 21, 2025 at 11:55 PM (HST)

NOTE: Letter(s) of Recommendation must be submitted directly from your references.
Cover Letter - a format guideline is provided in the Freshman Bridge application form.
Resume - please be sure to include the following information in your resume:
i. Work, volunteer, or research experience
ii. Laboratory, computer, technical, or other relevant skills
iii. Community service, extracurricular activities, or related hobbies you participate in
iv. Honors, awards, and scholarships
High School Transcripts and current courses for the SP 2025 semester - unofficial copies are allowed.
Letter of Recommendation, One (1) - from teachers, counselors, coaches, supervisors; submitted directly to nhsemp@hawaii.edu
