Reading at Home

Dear Parents:

In your child’s home school pouch, there is a book or two that your child can read to you at home. As you look at the book together, you should talk about the picture before you read the words, we call this a “picture walk,” predicting what the story may be about. You can point out that the picture matches one or some of the words on the page. As they read to you, your child should track their finger under the word they are

reading. Left to right movement and word/voice correspondence are very important skills for reading. There are some reading strategies on the other side of this letter for you to try when your child gets stuck on a word.

I do not have a sign out procedure for my books. Please make sure they get returned to the classroom as soon as you read them so they can get new ones!

Happy Reading!!
