Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2017:
The senior year can be a very busy, anxious, and exciting time as students start to make plans for the years beyond high school. It is our hope to try to help you and your senior go through this process with as little anxiety and frustration, and as much joy, as possible.
Seniors should make an appointment in the next couple of weeks (if they have not done so already) to meet with their counselor to continue the post high school planning process. Students who are planning on applying early decision or early action should make an appointment ASAP. Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings.
Some of the events happening over the next several weeks that may be of interest to you and your senior:
SENIOR FAMILY COLLEGE NIGHT
On Thursday, September 15, at 6:30 PM there will be an evening meeting for all parents and students regarding the college application process. It is especially important that you attend since we will be orienting you to Naviance application procedures. Please see enclosed bulletin for details.
COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTING - Fall dates for SAT and SAT II tests are: Oct. 1, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. Deadlines for regular registration for these tests are approximately five weeks before the test date, so be sure to plan ahead.
Information about the tests and how to register for them is at www.collegeboard.org . Most students applying to college this fall should plan to take the SAT and/or SAT IIs or ACT in October, November or December.
Some students choose to take the ACT in addition to or in place of the SAT. Fall ACT dates are Oct 22, and Dec 10. The ACT is not given at Hanover High School. Information on the ACT can be found at www.act.org.
COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES - During the fall more than 100 colleges will be sending representatives to Hanover High to meet with interested students. This list is continuously updated and posted in Naviance under the “Colleges” tab, on the right side of the screen, titled “Upcoming College Visits.” A weekly list is also posted in the HHS atrium.
PAYING FOR COLLEGE NIGHT - Wednesday, September 28th @ 6:30 will be Hanover High’s Paying For College Night. NHHEAF (New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation) and VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Corporation) will present to their prospective constituents.
NAVIANCE - An excellent resource for seniors and their parents is Naviance’s Family Connection (accessessed through the HHS web page. Naviance offers national college statistics, specific data pertaining to HHS, college representative visitation schedule, and much more! Students who do not already have a Naviance password should meet with their guidance counselor to get one.
COLLEGE FAIRS - There are a number of NEACAC (New England Association for College Admissions Counseling) College Fairs throughout the fall. For a listing please go to www.neacac.org . Two upcoming area fairs are:

PLANNING CALENDAR
FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS
SENIOR YEAR
SEPTEMBER
College Board/ACT: If you plan to retake the SAT I/SAT II/ACT, register for the October or November date. Your scores must be sent to colleges through your College Board account.
Counselor Meeting: Narrow your college list down to around six to eight schools of varying selectivity. Also, discuss your counselor’s recommendation.
Common Application: Create your commonapp.org account if you have not already done so. Add your colleges. Review the supplements and test requirements for each college. Begin to work on your college essay.
Counselors: Will be meeting with all seniors in their English classes to go over Naviance and the Common App
Naviance: Move the colleges you are applying to to the “Colleges I’m Applying to” and request transcripts to be sent. Be aware of deadlines!
Parents & Students: Attend the Senior Family College Night on : Thursday, September 15th at 6:30.
Parents & Students: Attend the HHS Financial Aid Night on Wednesday, September 28th.
Students: Decide whom you want to write recommendations for you and ask them now if you have not already done so. Always ask them at least three weeks prior to the earliest deadline. After you have met with the teacher, put the request in Naviance.
OCTOBER
College Board/ACT: Retake the SAT I or SAT II or ACT (if you pre-registered for the October test date). If you plan to retake the SAT I or II test, register for the December test date. STUDENTS: Your scores must be sent through your College Board account to the colleges to which you are applying.
Parents & Students: If you want to revisit colleges that were not in session when you visited them earlier, do this between now and December. Sign up online or call the admissions office to arrange overnight hosting, meal tickets, classroom visits, etc.
Parents: The Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) becomes available October 1st. Start to complete the FAFSA and the CCS profile if required, especially if your student is applying early action or early decision.
Students: Complete the first drafts of college essays and begin final revisions.
NOVEMBER
College Board/ACT: Retake the SAT I or SAT II/ACT (if you pre-registered for the November test date). Important: your scores must be sent through your College Board account to the colleges you are applying to.
Naviance/Common Application: Application deadlines for most early decision and early action plans fall between Nov. 1st and Dec. 1st. If you know where you plan to apply, request transcripts and teacher recommendations on Naviance.
DECEMBER
College Board/ACT: Retake the SAT I or II/ ACT (if you pre-registered for the December test date). Send your scores through your College Board account to the colleges to which you are applying.
Common Application: Complete and submit all college essays and supplements.
Naviance: Make sure transcripts and recommendations have been requested through Naviance. This should be done at least three weeks prior to the deadline. Transcripts are not sent over break, all requests must be in prior to the holiday break.
Parents: Complete the FAFSA and any other student aid applications required by the college if you have not already done so. (CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE and other forms are required by many private colleges).
JANUARY
Students: Complete and submit any remaining applications.
FEBRUARY and MARCH
Wait…
APRIL
Naviance: Most colleges will announce their decisions this month. Update your Naviance account with the decisions.
Students: If you are admitted by more than one college, weigh all the options carefully before making a decision. If financial aid is an issue, don’t hesitate to call the financial aid office if you have questions about their award or wish to discuss it further.
Local scholarships: An application will be available at the end of March in the Guidance office. Pick up an application from the Guidance Receptionist. Applications are due at the end of April.
MAY
Students: May 1st is the “Candidate’s Reply Date” to which most colleges subscribe. This is the date by which students are required to submit an admissions deposit to the college they plan to attend. If you were placed on the “wait list” at a college that you would want to attend if offered the chance, write or call that college to let them know of your interest. Talk with your counselor about any “new evidence” that might be submitted to strengthen your credentials.
Naviance: As soon as you have decided which college to attend, update your Naviance account and notify your counselor of your plans. Please remember to thank your recommenders It is also good practice to notify all other colleges that accepted you that you will not be coming.
