Spanish 1 (not offered by Sra. Doyle in 2013-14)

Welcome to Spanish 1, an introductory language class, designed to develop skills in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language. The goal is that by June, students will be able to communicate comfortably in the present, near past and near future tenses about a wide variety of themes. We will follow the grammar and vocabulary curriculum as presented in the textbook, Realidades (Pearson Prentice Hall). Realidades also provides some online practice, as indicated in the text next to the pertinent exercises. We will supplement the textbook curriculum with a conversation program and verb conjugation drills.

In addition, students will become familiar with various aspects of hispanic culture, including poetry, art, current events and geography.

Here is a link to a site where you can practice the Spanish Alphabet, the foundation for speaking and understanding Spanish. Learn the alphabet, including its proper pronunciation, and note the various changes in the alphabet so that you are able to use a new or old Spanish dictionary.

Find the following folders and attached documents: CC, Conversación cotidiana (Conversation lessons), Course Standards (Course Expectations), Syllabus (monthly calendar of assignments), Poesía (packet of poems for the year), Verbos (Verb list for the year & practice sheet template) and Vocabulario. Note that there is a sample vocabulary homework assignment (i.e. partially completed list for p. 2-3) in the folder Vocabulario.

One hard copy of these (and most other documents throughout the year) will be distributed in class. Any additional copies must be downloaded and printed.

There are online vocabulary, verb and grammar drills available here. For vocabulary, select spanish vocabulary (by book)/Realidades 1/ capítulo #.

Please visit our Spanish 1 Sound Cloud group, book mark the site and use it to prepare oral and listening activities, such as poetry recitations.

I encourage students to seek other opportunities for exploring and using Spanish, including conversation with Spanish-speakers and learners, Spanish Club at HHS, listening to music, watching films, reading online newspapers and children's books, and following independent study programs. The Howe Library provides some Spanish films, Mango online and various self-study courses available in the audio section.

Here is the link to our art program. Students will study these works and their artists throughout the year and be tested as part of the final exam.

If the is site is in any way incomplete, out of date, inaccessible or inadequate, please let me know immediately by email.
