Academic Support Syllabus 2023/2024
Academic Support is an inclusive class. All students are welcome and respected no matter their race, religion, gender identify, disability, or economic status.
Grading
Academic Skills is a Pass/Fail Class.
A passing grade is earned for consistently meeting the following criteria:
using class time wisely
using good effort
following staff directions
allowing peers to work
attending class when present at school
Curriculum
Please Note
This curriculum is for general planning purposes only. Tasks may be deleted, moved to another year or added depending on a student’s needs and when a student enters the program.
Academic Skills DOES NOT replace the need for students to do work at home; if your student suggests that he/she has finished his/her work, ask to see it!
Study Skills - students will
complete a study skills survey - pre, mid, and post year
record homework assignments & due dates using a method that works for them
explore and practice new ways of studying facts for assessments
practice taking notes using the outline method &/or the paragraph/section method
make a 3 column study guide for math vocabulary
practice actively asking for help & keeping classroom teachers informed of difficulties or problems
Executive Functioning - as needed, students will participate in
setting up and using an organizational system for storing handouts, homework assignments and other paper products
clean-outs of organizational system - biweekly, monthly, quarterly depending on a student's need
informing staff of what they plan to work on during class time when asked
weekly grade check-ins on Weeks 2 - 10 0f a quarter
prioritizing homework assignments
chunking lengthy & long term assignments & recording chunks in the student’s agenda or calendar
prewriting activities
using a template outline to organize thoughts for an essay
using a reference card or sheet as a guide through math problems
demonstrating where to find resources
individual activities as needed
Transition Activities - students will
write a year long term SMART goal for school
create a person centered plan
complete a college survey
in conversation, demonstrate an understanding of his/her disability & accommodations
Transition Activities - upon request, students can receive help for
constructing a resume
writing a cover letter
writing a common application essay
navigate an online job application
Individual Help and Instruction on Content Classes as Needed
