Vision Statement
The vision of the G-T/R-A School Counseling Program is that every child will become a thriving, caring, and resilient member of society, utilizing career and life skills to gain every day success and happiness.
Mission Statement
The mission of the G-T/R-A School Counseling Department is to provide a proactive, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate program to address students' academic and career goals in addition to supporting their social and emotional needs. This is accomplished through a partnership with parents/guardians, teachers/staff, and community members to enable all students to become successful, productive citizens and lifelong learners in a diverse and changing world.
Philosophy
G-T/R-A Students will become independent, successful adults who are prepared to make choices for a fulfilling future. The major emphasis of the Community School District(s) K-12 comprehensive counseling program is to aid in the development of the whole child. This includes facilitating personal, social, academic, and career development in each student, so the individual becomes an independent, successful adult. The program serves all students as an integral part of the educational process through a collaborative effort among students, staff, family, and community. It is developmentally appropriate, driven by data, preventative and responsive in nature, and varied in delivery.
We believe that:
Students’ ability to learn is dependent upon having their basic needs being met.
All students have the right to an emotionally and physically safe learning environment.
Students benefit from a learning environment of mutual respect.
Critical thinking is an essential skill.
Students learn in different ways.
Each student needs an advocate in his/her life.
A positive home/school relationship promotes success.
All students-regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation-shall have equal access to all services provided by the counselors and school.
Everyone in the school environment is responsible for ensuring that students receive counseling services.
A comprehensive, developmental school counseling program is not a support service but an integral part of the total education program.
The American School Counselor Association ethical standards should guide the work of the School Counseling Program and School Counselors.
School counselors work toward these goals for students through classroom based or large group sessions and small support groups for students on a variety of topics such as “changing families”, grief and loss, friendship/social skills, healthy lifestyles and self-esteem. Counselors may also work individually with students to assist them in solving problems and coping with situations that may be affecting school performance. Counselors may also meet with students with special needs to provide services related to individualized student goals.
Goals: The goals of the G-T/R-A Community School District Comprehensive Counseling Program are organized in three developmental domains and are aligned with those of the American School Counseling Association. The counseling staff is one component of the District’s service delivery system to accomplish these goals. The collaborative work of our teachers, parents, agency representatives and all members of the school community is needed to support our students in reaching these goals.
Student counseling is a right and will be available to all students in grades K-12.
Students shall have access to a professional school counselor. Counseling services are available to all students, including English language learners and hearing impaired students.
The School Counseling Program shall be proactive and consistent with the developmental stages of learning.
The School Counseling program shall be managed by licensed professional school counselors using a collaborative approach.
A comprehensive developmental school counseling program has instructional activities based on the needs of the students. It is an integral part of the student's total educational experience. It provides a vital link to the total instructional program of the school.
An ongoing system of staff development and professional school counselor competency renewal is necessary to maintain a quality school counseling program.
The School Counseling Program contains measurable student outcomes, which address the needs of all students at all educational levels.
The School Counseling Program shall be regularly evaluated based upon current best practices and student competencies.
