This lesson will work for in-class students as well. For Part 2 when students look at trash consider having them analyze trash after lunch in the cafeteria and the classroom trash cans at the end of the day. Many garbage / recycling focused lessons invite students to pour out trash and sort it. Although it sounds gross this can be a really engaging experience for 5th graders. Be sure students wear plastic gloves and wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Also for Part 2 consider printing the charts and graphs and having students analyze that data with peers. For Part 4 have students brainstorm ideas with peers. This could be with a partner, small group, or a whole class brainstorm session. Brainstorming and sharing ideas leads to better solutions. Also encourage students to provide feedback to each other on their final solutions. Again, sharing ideas will help them to improve their solutions.
