Academic and Career Planning

What is Academic and Career Planning (ACP)?

With the beginning of the 2017-2018 School Year came some excited new changes to education in the state and in our district. One of these changes is the addition of state mandated Academic and Career Planning (ACP) for all 6th-12th grade students. ACP refers to both a process that helps students integrate academic and career development activities, and a product that is created and maintained to document and support these activities. ACP facilitates personalizing each student’s educational experience while providing opportunities to set goals in preparation for their future.

Our district has been offering a number of ACP services to students for several years. However, this year and in years to come the district is committed to adding more of those services to help better prepare our students for their futures, help them find value in what they are already doing, and take advantage of all of the great opportunities they have. Though ACP activities are and will be incorporated into a child's curriculum in a number of ways, in order to better service students in a number of ways we have created a daily 24 minute ACP time after our 2nd hour class for grades 7-12. Students are divided and assigned to advisors they report to daily, but may be pulled by other staff members when necessary. This can be a time for students to meet with their teachers to get help on things they might not understand or even make up things they may have missed on a day they were absent. Each week (9-12 grade, and every other week 7&8 grade) students are allotted a day to meet with Mrs. Linde during ACP time. For some classes, the week's activity might be a self-exploration type activity, while others may be learning some career related soft-skills, doing test prep for ACT, researching colleges and scholarships, learning other life-skills, or researching careers. 6th grade students will receive many of their ACP services starting in December of each year through their Classroom Counseling time with the elementary school counselor, Ms. Helbach.

Do we have Advanced Placement (AP)?

Yes and no. GLHS does not offer AP classes. Students do have the option of taking AP classes online through WVS if our school does not offer a comparable class. However, students do not need to take an AP class in order to test in a subject area - which like IB exams could lead to possible college credits.
