Freak the Mighty Synopsis:
Freak the Mighty is a novel by Rodman Philbrick about Kevin and Max, childhood friends who bond over their disabilities and help each other navigate life. Max has a learning disability, and Kevin wears leg braces. They bond over their disabilities.
Units of Study (MA State Standards)
I. Three Parts of Health
Students will know and be able to identify healthy behaviors that will promote positive physical, social and mental health
II. Decision Making
Students will be able to identify the five steps in making healthy decisions and apply to real world situations
Students will be able to make rational decisions that promote personal physical, emotional and social well-being
III. Puberty
Students will recognize the physical, mental and social changes that occur during puberty
Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to promote and maintain positive growth and development
IV. Eating Disorders
Students will be able to explain the distinctive characteristics of Anorexia, Bulimia and Compulsive Over-Eating (Binge Eating) Disorders
Students will recognize and understand the causes, risks and treatments
V. Bullying
Students will learn how their actions affect and influence those around them
Students will identify constructive alternatives to violence
VI. Tobacco Education
Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to be competent in making health enhancing decisions regarding the use of tobacco products
Students will recognize and understand the short and long term effects of smoking and tobacco use
