Glastonbury Public Schools Science
Grade 8—Concepts of Physics
This course is designed to introduce students to some of the fundamental principles and laws that govern phenomena that we experience in our everyday lives and that determine the interactions of matter and energy throughout the Universe. Content areas that are explored include motion, forces, energy, electricity, magnetism, and waves. The course provides opportunities for inquiry and a wide variety of practical laboratory investigations, as well as for application of the engineering design process. Students can explore concepts and develop scientific skills that lay the foundation for further studies of science at the high school level.
This course is offered at two different levels of challenge. Level 2 is for most students. It explores grade level content, and sets achievement expectations appropriate for typical eighth graders. Level 1 is intended for students who desire and are capable of greater academic challenges. Students enrolling in Level 1 should have an excellent academic record as well as excellent critical thinking and laboratory skills. The nature of Concepts of Physics also demands significant application of mathematical skills, including some facility with algebra. Students striving for the challenges of Level 1 should be independent and self-motivated learners, and exhibit a genuine curiosity about the natural world.
