Director of Research & Evaluation
Originally from Hyattsville, MD, I have lived in Washington, DC for over a decade. I have over 15 years of experience leading program design, monitoring, evaluation, research, and organizational learning activities for youth development organizations both in the US and internationally. I am particularly passionate about integrating innovative and participatory methodologies to support utilization of results and inclusion of all stakeholders in research and evaluation processes. As the Director of Research and Evaluation, I am excited to support Girls Inc. in gathering information that is useful, actionable, and helps us tell our story! I hold a Master of Arts degree from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, where my studies focused on Design, Monitoring, and Evaluation and International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution.
What kind of data viz chart are you?
I am a dot plot, which is alternative way to display data that is often used in place of bar charts. While I’m different from your traditional default Excel graphs, I am really here as an uncluttered way to show your data so that they are easily digestible and useable by different audiences!
Favorite Part of the Data Cycle?
I love getting to do data collection, because it allows me to interact with participants and staff directly and hear their feedback about successes and challenges!
Research Manager
A career youth development professional with over 7 years of experience implementing programs and 6 years working in youth development program evaluation. Holding the research manager position, I work with both the national and affiliate staff to streamline & improve research and evaluation practices, develop reports for internal and external use, and support the overall functioning and utilization of our participant management database (aka your Compass-360 navigator!).
What kind of data viz chart are you?
I’m totally a line chart. Everything I am, and everything I do is shaped by my history and experience. Knowing what came before, helps inform what will happen next.
Favorite Part of the Data Cycle?
Use! That’s why I do what I do. I want to help folks understand and in turn use data to continuously improve their work.
Current Data Resource Obsession:
https://depictdatastudio.com/blog/ by Ann K. Emery
I love her focus on making data accessible to multiple audiences! I also really admire how she’s able to demonstrate great visuals using simple tools, like excel. A great example for non-profits, we don’t need fancy programs to understand and use our data effectively!
Information Specialist
I’m a Washington, DC native with an educational background in engineering and a passion for data analytics. With three years of hands-on experience in the non-profit sector, I’ve honed my skills in data cleaning, analysis, and visualization to turn raw data into actionable insights that drive organizational success. As the Information Specialist at Girls Inc., I’m committed to effectively communicating data insights to stakeholders and national affiliates to highlight the impact of our work and the power of our mission.
What kind of data viz chart are you?
I would consider myself a scatter plot. Although that comparison could carry a negative connotation, I believe it highlights how I’m multi-dimensional, with many layers that work together to reveal a full picture. I value individuality and curiosity. Each dot stands alone, yet provides context—you just have to be curious enough to ask, “What’s the connection?”
Favorite Part of the Data Cycle?
Analyze and share (of course!). I really appreciate digging into raw data and pulling out patterns and insights that, at first, seem like a chaotic mess. But where it all truly comes together is in the creativity of visualizing the story you’re trying to tell. It’s about making the data speak in a way the audience can instantly understand.
Current Data Resource Obsession:
Lately, my data resource obsession has been Kaggle. It’s a great space for exploring real-world datasets and seeing the creative ways others approach the same challenges. I love how it pushes me to keep learning while sparking new ideas for how to better communicate insights in my own work.
Researcher
I am a Georgetown University Alumni with a background in sociology originally hailing from New York City. I am very passionate about education and policy research to best inform learning and programming for students across the country. As Researcher with R&E I am excited to work on research-informed program evaluations in collaboration with the Research team and the Program Services team to inform the best outcomes for girls. Additionally, I am committed to supporting the R&E team on data insights and analytics and communicate them effectively to our organization.
What kind of data viz chart are you?
I would say I'm a pie chart! Each slice is an important percentage that provides a holistic picture of who I am and what I am passionate about.
Favorite Part of the Data Cycle?
I really enjoy taking data and discovering trends and patterns that can inform practices, policies, and programming for the best possible outcome. Creating solutions and better informing wider audiences is the most rewarding aspect of working with data.
