Freshman year in high school is known for being a very exciting year for students, but it also can be a little intimidating and scary. At John F. Kennedy High School-JFKHS we want to help students make their transition from middle school to high school a smooth one with minimal bumps.

Our Freshman Academy Goals are to help increase graduation rates, improve students grade point average-GPA, facilitate smooth transition to high school and minimize as well as decrease the amount of learning challenges associated with attendance and behavior.

This program is overseen by our Freshman Academy administrator Mr. Jonathan Pilarca. It's an evidence based comprehensive program for all first-time 9th graders and designate cluster of classrooms for 9th graders in their core classes. At JFKHS we have four (4) teams with various activities and curriculum programs specifically geared to our freshman academy students. Each freshman is assigned to a Freshman Academy “team” of four (4) set teachers in their core classes. (English, Math, Biology, and World Geography)

Parental involvement and support is another KEY aspect for success in our Freshman Academy platform. Parental support helps encourage our students to be responsible for their academic duties. Parents can utilize Power School to stay actively involved by keeping in touch with teachers, asking questions when concerns arise, and monitor our students progress thru Power School. Many parents are also actively involved in varies extra curricula activities and functions.

Freshman Academy Goal: To provide a personalized learning environment to address the unique needs of freshmen

Objective 1: By end of the first year in high school, the percentage of students losing credit and/or failing one or more courses during the freshman year will decline by 5 percentage points when comparing 1st quarter marks to 1st semester marks and 3rd quarter marks to 2nd semester marks.

Objective 2: By end of the first year in high school, the attendance rate will increase by 5 percentage points when comparing 1st semester attendance data marks to 2nd semester attendance data marks.

Objective 3: By end of each school year in high school, the percentage of students promoting to the next grade level will increase by 2 percentage points when compared to the previous cohort year.

Objective 4: By end of the cohort’s graduation year, the percentage of students graduating will increase by 6 percentage points compared to the previous graduating cohort year.
