In this case study we examine the effects of energy store and return ankle foot orthoses (ESR AFOs) on a 14 year old active Spina Bifida patient (Ruder, 2008). The ESR AFOs are shown to support previous claims of beneficial effects found during walking both within the kinematics of the ankle as well as at the knee. In addition, beneficial effects are also shown to take place while running when compared to a shoes only condition. This case study shows the need for further examination of the effects of ESR AFOs on larger populations and in comparison to other braces.
