Our Funding Dilemma: Typically, JROTC programs receive full funding from the branch of service under which they are established to cover uniform, travel, equipment, instructor, and remaining incidental costs. To qualify for those funds, schools our size must have 100 students enrolled in the program. We currently have over 50 students enrolled at Mountain View, but we would need to double in order to receive Navy funding.
Funding Requirements: As a result, every penny we spend is fundraised or donated--much thanks to local veterans and veteran organizations in Bend! MVHS Cadet Corps is left to fundraise for food, transportation (bus and drivers), replacing outdated uniforms, drill rifles, flags, marksmanship rifles, substitute teachers, and other incidentals. The Bend La Pine School District does cover the cost of our instructor. However, our instructor is required to teach additional high school courses, and he does not have an assistant (typical for funded units). Substitute teachers are required for his teaching duties when he takes the Cadet Corps competitions and on field trips at the expense of funds raised privately by Cadet Corps students.
Recent Successes: The MVHS Cadets are very thankful to have a new, dynamic leader for our program. We are making great strides toward growing interest and, hopefully, increasing enrollment. We are establishing connections and serving the community with more service hours than ever before! We are improving every day and at every competition. For example, last year's drill team was the first to compete for our school in over 12 years! Our Color Guard team placed first in the Navy and among all interservice rivalries in the Pacific Northwest! Cadet have earned awards and recognition for each of our individual and team disciplines at competitions this year. This is a 400 percent improvement over previous years!
Our Need: In the meantime, your generous support is vital to the success of our program under the current challenges we face. Our cadets work exceptionally hard, and they deserve all of the opportunities our counterparts in other communities have. It is important that we match their efforts in any way we can.
