Does joining Cadet Corps mean I have to join the military?
NO – Cadet Corps is a high school elective class, not a military commitment of any kind. You do, however, get credits toward graduation requirements for taking this class. Check with your school counselor to see how Cadet Corps can help you. (If you have a boring elective, give us a chance. We are certainly not boring!)
Do I have to be an athlete to join Cadet Corps?
NO – exercise is good for all of us, but we are not about forced military marching and PT. We aren’t a high school PE class, but you can get PE credit after two years. If exercise and physical training is your thing, you can join our optional PT team which nearly always brings home the bling from regional competitions.
Do I have to wear a uniform all the time?
NO – we wear our official Navy uniforms one day a month and for special occasions, like parades. We have casual t-shirts, polo shirts, and sweatshirts that we wear one day a week. If it turns out that you LOVE your Cadet Corps swag, no one would get mad if you wore it more often.
Do I have to spend lots of time before school, after school, and on weekends with Cadet Corps?
NO – You are a high school student first! We are here to support you in your core classes. In the Corps, you are only required to fulfill your class obligations (school work and assignments). Obviously, we hope you will enjoy Cadet Corps so much that you will want to participate in everything we have to offer.
If I join Cadet Corps, does it keep me from playing sports or doing other activities?
NO – we have lots of cadets who have other interests and commitments, like sports teams, clubs, and fine arts (band, drama, orchestra, and choir).
If I join Cadet Corps, am I limited on the number of special teams I can join?
NO – we have lots of cadets that participate on more than one team. However, we want you to have a life outside of the Cadet Corps, so you will most likely not be able to do it all!
Do you travel in Cadet Corps?
YES – we travel by private jet, luxury coach, school bus to exotic places throughout the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington). We are fundraising for a spring trip to San Diego as well. Other exciting destinations could be added in the future.
Where do you sleep when you go out of town?
We stay in luxury hotels school classrooms at the hosting schools. If you travel to a competition, pack your sleeping bag and pad and prepare for an adventure.
If I choose to join a team, how long do competition trips last?
If we travel outside of Central Oregon, we leave on a Friday and return home on Sunday.
Do you have fun in Cadet Corps?
YES – we try to have fun with everything we do (within reason, of course, when we are working). We have social get togethers once a month to include bowling nights, movie nights, and activities where we just hang out as friends.
