So you're interested in Nordic Skiing and you have a few questions. Most of what you want to know is found somewhere on this web-site. But, to make things easy, here are the top few questions people ask.
Do I have to have my own equipment? No. We do have some equipment that has been donated. However, we do encourage racers to buy a pair of "combi" boots so their feet don't get blisters. We do not have enough equipment for every skier though.
Do my parents have to drive? Yes. We are a club sport. That means that we do not get money for transportation, or anything for that matter. We carpool up to ski every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Parents, please rotate responsibility. Once there, parents are free to join us and learn how to ski. We always need a couple of parents to ski at the tail of a group.
Do I have to know how to ski in order to join? NO!! This is a fun sport open to skiers at all abilities. We split apart at practices and teach good skiing technique.
Do we race both skate and classic technique? Yes. That means you need two types of skis, a skate pair and a classic pair. If you are new to skiing and don't know what that means, you are in the right place. Ask one of us and we will explain.
Can I use waxless classic skis with scales on them? Yes, kind of. If you are new to nordic skiing, they will work and are good to get you going. However, they are slow. We will try to get you on race skis.
Can I do both MBSEF and Bend High racing? Yes. We work together. Usually club skiers come with us for an easy practice.
Can I earn a BHS varsity letter? Yes, here's how. Finish a race in the top 5 on the team (this earns varsity points for the team) and compete at state. OR, be a senior and complete the year by qualifying and racing at state. Racers who earn points at state can also earn stars.
Are there any good videos to watch that will help me with my skiing? Yes!! Here is a link to a few.
